Lake Monona is a freshwater drainage lake in Dane County, Wisconsin, surrounded on three sides by the city of Madison, Wisconsin, and on the south side by the city of Monona, Wisconsin. It is the second-largest of a chain of four lakes along the Yahara River (also including Mendota, Kegonsa, and Waubesa) in the area and forms the south shore of the isthmus that forms downtown Madison. Fishing Contests Each year the Yahara Fishing Club sponsors a fishing contest for club members, with the biggest prize bragging rights for the following year. The emphasis is on catch and release, so winners are based on the length of single fish. Lake Waubesa Dam. The Yahara River flows unimpeded from the Mendota Locks through Lake Monona and Lake Waubesa. The Lake Waubesa Dam, popularly known as the Babcock Park Lock and Dam, is located at the outlet of Lake Waubesa in the Town of Dunn.
